Tips for Supporting a Loved One
-
Believe them: It's important to believe your loved one's story and validate their feelings. Avoid making them feel judged or blamed for the situation.
-
Listen without judgment: Create a safe space where your loved one feels comfortable opening up about their experience. Listen without judgment and avoid giving unsolicited advice.
-
Respect their boundaries: Everyone's journey is different. Respect your loved one's boundaries and decisions, even if you don't agree with them.
-
Connect them with resources: Provide your loved one with information about local resources, such as domestic violence hotlines, shelters, and counseling services. Let them know that they can reach out to these resources for support.
-
Take care of yourself: Supporting a loved one through a traumatic experience can be emotionally draining. Make sure to take care of your own physical and emotional well-being.
Safety Planning
-
If your loved one is in an abusive relationship, it's important to help them create a safety plan. This should include things like:
-
A safe place to stay
-
A way to communicate that is not monitored by the abuser
-
Important documents and belongings that they can take with them if they need to leave quickly
-
A plan for how they will get to a safe place if they need to leave
